This charred sesame broccoli recipe is a celebration of simple, vibrant flavors: smoky, caramelized florets meet nutty sesame oil, zesty lemon, and a touch of garlic. The quick sear in a hot pan develops deep flavor and a satisfying contrast of crisp-tender and charred bits. A drizzle of honey balances the tangy lemon, while toasted sesame seeds add crunch and visual appeal. It’s a perfect California summer side—bright, healthy, and deeply flavorful, whether enjoyed hot or at room temp. Try it as a stand-alone veggie dish, or pair with grilled fish, tofu, or rice for a full meal.
Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Preheat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until very hot.
  2. Toss the broccoli florets with 1 tbsp sesame oil and a pinch of salt.
  3. Add the broccoli in a single layer to the hot pan. Let it sear without stirring for 2 minutes to develop charred edges.
  4. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until bright green and crisp-tender. Push broccoli to the edges of the pan.
  5. Add remaining 1 tbsp sesame oil and the sliced garlic to the center. Sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant, then toss with broccoli.
  6. Drizzle in soy sauce, lemon zest, lemon juice, and honey. Stir-fry for 1 more minute to coat broccoli and reduce sauce slightly.
  7. Remove from heat. Sprinkle with chili flakes (if using), toasted sesame seeds, and a crack of black pepper.
  8. Serve warm or at room temperature.
